What are the tick marks on ド, originally ト, do? Does to become to-o? (that's just a guess from listening to a song) I see them on other katakana and on hiragana as well.

    ゛(known as 'dakuten' or 'tenten') changes the kanas pronunciation from having a voiceless consonant to a voiced one.
    ト = to
    ド = do

    So, for がぎぐげご / ガギグゲゴ the dakuten changes the voiceless "k" sound to a voiced "g" sound that uses your vocal chords in your throat.

    Same for ざじずぜぞ / ザジズゼゾ being changed from voiceless "s" to voiced "z" (although じ changes from it's "shi" sound to a "ji" sound).
    Same happens for voiceless "t" changing to voiced "d", and voiceless "h" changing to voiced "b".

    There's also a similar marker, ゜(known as 'handakuten'), which is only used for "h" sounds to change them to "p".

    へ = he; べ = be; ぺ = pe. ^^

    Oh yeah I remember seeing that other mark in Lessons. Thank you!
    It just slipped my mind but I really appreciate the explanation of the sounds becoming voiced. It makes more sense that way and is easier to remember. :)

    There are voiced courses on memrise.com and other sites to help you remember. I learned in an actual Japanese class, so we practiced them out loud, but something where the sounds are voiced will help you a lot.

    Thanks I'll check it out. ^_^

    The marks are called ten-ten and they change the sound to make it a harder sound. ( 'to' now becomes 'do', 'ko' becomes 'go', etc.
