I'm working on my plan right now. I move home in less than two months.

My Japanese is at decent conversational level atm. I was proud of myself, as I could maintain decent conversation with my peers for hours on end, but I noticed, when they would shift, and talk to another Japanese person, I would loose understanding.
I'm not native by any means.

Atm, I plan on returning to Seattle for about 6 months (+/-) then joining JET, if I am so lucky (My degree is in Education.) I'm 23歳. My boss recommends I don't take JET, but just return to Japan, and have a job. I will be attending a 'Job Hunting' conference tomorrow. Recently, I have been thinking of a 力仕事、as it would build me more. My girlfriend's father is an Electrician, and want's to bring me into the "Family Business"

Does anyone else have any other ideas? I'm simply brainstorming out loud here.

A job is a job to me. I would take the Family Business if I was you. JET mainly has you be an English teacher.....with other degrees...

My advice to you, carefully plan things out. Weight the pros and cons, of each job. And overall see if you LIKE the job. No reason to do something you don't like, that's a waste of your time....

JET is not a sure thing, and there's a waiting period for it. Also, is your girlfriend Japanese? Be aware if you do get on, your position is wherever they have an opening. That might cause issues if her family is in Kanto and you are assigned to Kyushu, for example. It doesn't seem like teaching English is something you'd be really interested in, so by all means, take up the family business.

My degree is actually in education, its been my baito here for two years, and longer back in America. I think Ill try JET first, and come up with a back up plan.

Best of luck. From what I hear, JET is pretty much a crap shoot. Know too little Japanese? No position for you. Know too much Japanese? No position for you. And again, be aware you're probably signing up for inaka in (enter random prefecture here). Is your girlfriend planning to move with you? I moved here to be with my wife who lives in the Kanto area, so couldn't take the risk of waiting 6 months to a year just to be placed in Kagoshima or something.

As Arachkid said, JET is pretty random with their selection. I applied for JET twice, and I didn't even get an interview. The second time I applied for JET, I had already passed the then 3級, graduated with an Asian Studies degree, and spoke quite a bit of Japanese. I know the JET programme is the most popular, but there are plenty of other companies out there. The company I've been with for the past 5 years is based in my prefecture. Do some research!

And while JET does pay the most - well, JET and direct placement - keep in mind if you're in a JET or direct placement position, you probably will be kept busy to make it worth that extra money. I've known plenty of JETs/DP who have extra duties one or two nights a week, and a weekend day twice a month. I'm still going to try for direct placement, but hoping I can avoid most of the off-hours stuff if it is a part of the position I'll be applying for (1 year old daughter makes one really appreciate the general ALT hours being short and sweet - well, 8 hours, but in Japan, that IS short).
