はなす = speak
はなせる = able to speak (potential to speak)
はなしたい = want to speak
So I suddenly thought, since grammar websites say 'the potential form is conjugated like an ichidan type verb'--if I take that literally, can I turn はなせる into its stem form はなせ and then add the auxiliary たい onto the end of it?" (like you do with ます for はなせます) ...
