    Scroll down to "Particles and Word Order":
    http://users.tmok.com/~tumble/qadgtj.html

    私【わたし】"I"
    書きます【かきます】"write" / 書きました【かきました】"wrote"
    手紙【てがみ】"letter"
    あなた "you"
    英語【えいご】"English"

    私は書きます。 = "I write."
    私は書きました。= "I wrote." (past tense form)
    私は英語に書きました。 = "I wrote in English." (で marks the implement)
    私はあなたに書きました。 = "I wrote to you." (に marks indirect object)
    私は手紙を書きました。 = "I wrote a letter." (を marks the direct object)

    私は英語であなたに手紙を書きました。 "I wrote a letter to you in English."

    You might notice that the subject came first in both English and Japanese, while the rest of the sentence is the exact opposite way round. So write the subject first, then write everything else in reverse order.

    English = I wrote (a) letter (to) you (in) English.
    Japanese = I English で you に letter を wrote.

    But yeah, this is just rough basics for simple sentences. Check out that guide and also make sure to spend a lot of time studying proper detailed grammar sites like the one chpr5157 mentioned. ^^

    What is "A wa B desu" pattern?
  • mog86uk
    Just realised I accidentally typed 英語に the first time instead of 英語で. Oops. ^^;

    @kyoshinoFT, Really? It's probably the first thing you learn for Japanese grammar.

    Replace "A" with the subject of the sentence.
    Replace "B" with the complement (what you want to say about the subject).

    For example:

    これはペンです。 (kore wa pen desu.)
    = "This is a pen"

    ・kore = "this" (the subject)
    ・wa (は) -- a particle which marks the topic (which is marking the subject in this case).
    ・pen = "pen"...
    ・desu -- a linking verb which simply links the complement "pen" to the subject; similar to the English "is/am/are".

    Or to use a sentence from your profile page as an example:

    私はオタクです。(watashi wa otaku desu.)
    = "I am an otaku." ^^
