- Amazon. Search, "Fairy Tail Volume (1, etc) in Japanese. Look in description to see if the book's in Japanese. Good way to tell is look at the cover on the picture. If there's Japanese on it, then it's in Japanese. I paid 3.99 + 3.99 shipping for a brand new one still in original wrapping.July 20, 2015 at 8:41am
- Search Fairy tail vol in Japanese. Look to see if the cover has Japanese on it. You can also Google :pJuly 20, 2015 at 8:43am
- Is Amazon really a good place to look for Fairy Tail manga in the Japanese language?
The UK Amazon site definitely doesn't seem a very good place to look for it, but the US one doesn't look too bad. Or do you mean the Japanese site? It can get very expensive with delivery costs to the UK added on top though.
@ruperherro, If you're not too fussed about whether you want to buy physical or digital manga, you might want to check out this site which has Japanese language only digital versions of manga:
http://www.ebookjapan.jp
It lets you create an account even if you say you don't live in Japan. It accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express,... so it looks like you can buy stuff without needing a Japanese address or bank account, but I haven't tried to pay for anything (yet).
The manga is stored as .ebix files, so you need to use their software to view it. They have viewer software for Windows and Mac, and there is an app for Android, iPhone and iPad. Also, you can view the manga you own in your web browser directly on their website. Here's the info about the different reader varieties I just mentioned:
http://www.ebookjapan.jp/ebj/guide/about_reader.asp
It comes with a few sample manga (not big names though) and has quite a few free volumes to try out, some of which you can download and others you can only view on the website:
http://www.ebookjapan.jp/ebj/freebooks/
I think you should be able to check out some of those free volumes in your browser without even needing to make an account. I've downloaded the Windows application and the Android app, and I'm enjoying reading the small selection of the free stuff.
The Fairy Tail volumes are 400 yen each, which with the current exchange rate of almost 200 Japanese yen to 1 British pound, that's about 2 quid a volume with no delivery or other costs (although, as I said, I've not tried to pay for anything yet, so maybe there are taxes or snags preventing you from buying abroad altogether--hopefully not though). ^^July 20, 2015 at 9:51am - rupertherro *
Just noticed my typo, sorry.
I've read a review by someone living outside of Japan without a Japanese bank account. They confirm they were able to make purchases easily with credit/debit cards, with no problems and without needing to give any Japanese addresses. ^^
Also, I've noticed that you can preview almost every volume of almost every manga on their store. Often the first volume preview is around 50 pages! You can either download the preview to the app or can read it directly on the website. Here's the page where you can preview the first volume of Fairy Tail:
http://www.ebookjapan.jp/ebj/title/21395.html?volume=1
If you look further down, it says:
ページ数: 193ページ (193 pages)
立読ページ数: 52ページ (52 preview browsing pages)
To check out the preview, click the top button of the four green rectangle buttons: "立読".
Then it will ask if you accept terms and conditions, so click the "利用規約に同意する" button to accept.
Then on the next page, click the blue button "ブラウザで読む" (read using web browser). Or if you have the app on your device, click the red button to download the preview to it.
I haven't watched or read Fairy Tail before. I'm going to go read that preview on my phone now. ^^July 20, 2015 at 11:39am - ^^
Thx man. It has the manga I'm looking for. It's so hard trying to find it....they don't have the last volume though....
The manga are also cheap :)July 22, 2015 at 9:32am - It takes some time to get used to the website before you can find everything it has to offer. Like here's all the free manga volumes aimed at males:
http://www.ebookjapan.jp/ebj/sale/?mode=free&genre=1
In just two days I've downloaded a ridiculous amount of the free stuff onto my phone. I now have the first volume preview of pretty much every anime I've ever watched.
If you are browsing the categories, make sure to set the 発売日(release date) filter 全て(all) to see much more stuff.
One useful ジャネル(genre) is the キッズ(kids) one.
http://www.ebookjapan.jp/ebj/new/?period=all&genre=8
There isn't much free stuff in the kids section, and a lot of it is picture books with text or just text (not all of it is manga), but it is very neat for reading practice more suitable for us Japanese learners.
Of the completely free stuff in the kids section, there is an interesting 7 volume collection with hundreds of pages of short essays written by children in elementary and highschool in the various regions of Japan.
http://www.ebookjapan.jp/ebj/title/306593.html
Most of these essays are very short, simple, real life stories involving the each kid's families. Because it is written by kids, most of the essays stick to the lower level educational kanji and reasonably simple vocabulary and grammar. And being essays they have been written with attention to using grammar correctly.
Just sticking with the previews in the kids section there is plenty of reading material to practice on. At the really easy end, the Disney picture books so basic that it has no kanji and goes further by putting furigana on the katakana words! lol. In one of the kids books I came across this sentence which I thought was hilarious:
どうして おならは くさいの?
"Why do farts stink?" :DJuly 23, 2015 at 6:49am - Oops. I meant to write "written by children in elementary and JUNIOR highschool" (小~中). I get confused with translating it into foreign English terminology.
I am trying to decide which manga I might want to actually pay for once I finish looking through all the free stuff. At the moment I'm thinking about buying some of the クレヨンしんちゃん volumes. When I tried Fairy Tail it seemed too much like something I'd much rather be watching than reading, same as how I feel about virtually all manga.July 23, 2015 at 8:21am - sorry only just able to get on here, thanks a bunch for this :)July 24, 2015 at 3:51am
