This is going to be a silly question, but could someone let me know if I am constructing sentences properly? I don't write very often, or converse in Japanese because it annoys my brother. Hopefully I don't butcher the language too badly.
私は非常に眠いです.
Also, I thought "とても" could work in place of "非常に," but it just didn't sound right to me. If I am wrong, please let me know. ありがとうございます!

...And, I cannot edit post. Oh well. Anyway, the sentence is supposed to translate to "I am very sleepy." Hopefully "非常に" is proper...
Not a silly question at all.
Other than maybe the fullstop at the end should be "。", there's nothing wrong with that sentence. I think とても is more common, but both 非常に or とても are used this way and are both fine. ^^
とても seems like just plain "very".
非常に means "very" as well, but I think it's more in a "unusually", "irregularly", "abnormally", "extraordinarily" kind of way. "I feel unusually/abnormally/extraordinarily tired" is something you can say in English. Being tired at a time you shouldn't be; being a lot more tired than you think you should be.
I don't really know for sure though. Just what I think.- Thanks for your response! It was very in-depth and helpful. I am glad to know that I am making some progress.
I would add that unlike とても, 非常に isn't used with verbs, only adjectives.
