Hello,
I've been thinking to run a competition in JapaneseClass with a prize.
As for a start, the prize needs to be affordable, around $10-$50
I wonder what item can be the most attractive for all.
Japanese snacks? Japanese magazines? Learning Japanese books? Figure? Japanese traditional items or..
Please give me ideas. :)
Thank you!

- I like the idea of all of those XD. Picking a specific of all of them really depends on the person though. Maybe snacks would be the easiest as you can just get something general?
Kind of off topic but I've been wondering if there is a reason you don't accept donations from other sources(credit/mastercard/etc)? Is there an associated processing fee with those?September 2, 2015 at 6:27pm - @DragonR33UA For a start, I want users to spread the word about JapaneseClass.jp. So the competition would be as easy as spreading the word. The more you spread the word the more chance you will win.
After that competition, I want to see how many people would participate, and how aggressive the competition. From there I'm thinking to make more interesting competitions with prize.
yes, snacks is more general for everybody. Any other suggestions?
The reasons for that is because I can't accept credit cards at the moment. I suppose I need to make some agreements with banks to accept payments with credit card. I think you can process credit card with PayPal. Do you know any other alternative payment services? I know there's stripe, but I need an American bank account.September 2, 2015 at 7:52pm - As far as other ideas go maybe light novels or manga? It's quite hard to get Japanese novels/manga outside of Japan and lots of users would be interested in it, although again that might be more personal to the winner.
Maybe something on the site too that lets everyone see they won a contest? just a little star next to their user profile or something?
Questions about the contest:
Is it possible to run it in such a way where something like rikai-chan/kun isn't an issue? As far as I know it works from grabbing the text, so maybe if you change the buttons from text to .jpgs it can stop that?
Is user advantage going to be accounted for in some way? Generally(not saying this is always the case) level 7s will have quite an advantage over level ones. Will there be tiers or multipliers? Maybe something like level 1-2, 3-4, 5-7 competition brackets, or multipliers based on level. Such as a level 7 would receive only 10% for a level 1 answer?
I know it's just an idea but just throwing some stuff out there ^^
You can process most(I think?) cards with Paypal, but I think there is always a fee associated with it? Also I have no idea what stripe is ><September 3, 2015 at 9:18pm - Books for learning Japanese!
September 4, 2015 at 5:16am - I think most everyone would be okay with you setting a prize amount, and then letting the winner choose what they want, if they're okay with an obvious waiting period for their prize.September 4, 2015 at 8:44am
- Would we be allowed to swap the prize for a simple feature request for JCJP? Won't even cost you any money, just time. I can think of several things I'd trade a $50 prize for! :PSeptember 4, 2015 at 10:20am
- A feature request that would be optional, sure. Would hate to see someone else's idea of a good feature heaped on my account without the option to remove it. :PSeptember 7, 2015 at 8:12am
- By "feature" requests, what I really meant was requests for modifications to certain problematic aspects on this site. Chiefly:
・Disable the "Readings" tab on user profile pages. Could even add this as an option within "account settings" for users to chose this for their own profiles. This would fix the problem where each Readings quiz you do causes your profile page to take longer to load. In extreme cases like Kekkou's profile, it is now impossible to load the profile at all! I stopped doing Readings mostly due to this problem. (The tab could still be re-implemented at a later date once a real solution is found.)
・Fix the recent problem where "New" questions completely ignore the Practice level settings (unless this was intentionally changed a few months ago for a good reason).
・Remove the 29 correct answer per question EXP cap. Some users earnt lots of EXP before this cap was introduced. Now it is virtually impossible to reach rank 1 due to this. If necessary, it doesn't need to be removed completely--can just make it so after 29 correct answers you no longer get combo bonus (just 6~13 base EXP dependant on question level). Maybe allow oblivion questions to receive combo bonus though, since they can only be repeated every 30 days at least.
・Adjust the how the Readings vocabulary definitions are picked to avoid archaic and obscure usages being grabbed when there are other definitions with "common" or "jlpt" tags.
・Adjust the EXP you earn from Readings questions from 7 EXP to an amount more respectable for the effort--something like 20 EXP at least.
There are others, like restoring the "combo" sort option to the Rankings page, but they are very minor in comparison. I don't think anyone would object to these? The order I wrote them in is probably in order of importance, but I know which one I'd pick as my prize (#3)! :P
I guess this spoils the spirit of the idea Beeant had. Ideally, if I happened to win, I would still want to try to swap my prize for one of those things though. ^^September 7, 2015 at 9:38am - to spread the word do you mean like one of those facebook competitions where you like and share for an entry ? or would you be introducing some sort of recommendation codes that we give to friends when they join they enter it to show we introduced them to the sit?
As for prizes I don't think snacks is a good idea. as much as I love snacks there may be an issue for those with allergies.
Oh I just thought of something. maybe you could have a mascot competition and the winning design could get a t-shirt or something. there's sites where you can make that sort of merchandise pretty inexpensively.
subsequently having a mascot could generate extra income for the site as you could sell stuff with it on.September 8, 2015 at 9:23pm
