So I just moved into my new house and I have found that I will not have any WiFi, so the only time I can practice my Japanese is at school. Which is a very difficult thing to do. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I could also be studying at home without the help of the trusty internet? Because I am going insane because I can't study when I want to ;.; please help me

    If you're still not 100% perfect on hiragana and katakana, or just if you've never gotten around to trying to write them by hand, then try writing out the hiragana and katakana tables on paper. Try to see how well you remember their shapes, and see how many of them you forget each time.

    All you need for this is a pen/pencil/crayon/... and a scrap bit of paper. No internet needed. ^^

    ^ I really wish there was a similar way you could continue this with kanji, if anyone knows a good way. Because the kana are organised into nice rows and columns, but kanji don't really have any memorable order to them.

    You could buy a book, too...'-'

    Meh, if you wanted, there is an order to kanji, but it's really meant for people learning Japanese as their first language.

    @Arachkid, But is it a "memorable order"?

    I'm not sure that what you refer to is really a full sequence either. Is it actually possible to say "the 133rd kanji of grade 3 in the education kanji list" and people would be able to look up which kanji is being referred to? Within each grade, aren't the block of kanji specific to that grade just taught in whatever order the teacher decides? It's hardly the same as kana's 五十音order, or even 伊呂波 order.

    The best idea I had for studying kanji the way I mentioned you can for kana, is to compile a list of either the meanings or the readings of every kanji you want to study. Then print out this list, and then try to write the correct kanji next to each item in the list from memory. But this is hardly as straightforward as being able to just grab a scrap piece of paper and practice whenever/wherever you feel like it. ^^;

    In that there are students who actively ask each other what is the 123rd kanji taught in such-and-such a grade - and people can answer - yeah, it's a well-followed order. Not well known, and people who ask about which kanji is the nth of the nth grade are doing it for fun - like kanji kentei otaku or something - but enough so that I have been asked more than once at different schools. I of course cannot answer, but I have no straight forward studying method, I queue up kanji I don't know well yet in SRS, whatever level they may be in school doesn't apply.

    I assume the ordering within grades = by onyomi then by kunyomi (五十音順)? That is the way the government's official list publication is sorted anyway. I can't remember if there is any numbering used in the lists though. I guess the 教育 kanji are actually taught in a set order then. That's interesting. ^^

    There's a lot of downloadable PDF's of both text and workbooks you can study with offline! If you don't have a dropbox I highly suggest getting one, or even searching"japanese work/textbook" in your search engine (always check that it's coming from a viable, non-virusy webpage!) will get you great resuts. I hope that helps!

    I currently have the genki work and textbooks (1&2, the elementary stuff), if you'd like them.
  • emmyrock002
    I have heard of genki and have though of buying them but being under age and jobless makes it a little difficult
  • bitchchan
    Oh, actually I was able to download them for free.
