- you will really need to read Japanese more so than write it, so more practice even as an exchange student is very helpful.
January 17, 2016 at 2:34am - When I went on holiday to Japan for a month, I regretted not practicing speaking Japanese. Many of the Japanese people I stayed with barely understood any English at all. I couldn't really talk to people except in English, other than throwing in random Japanese words for fun. Like when someone was struggling to explain to me in English what subject she is studying for, I replied "Ah, けんちくがく (architecture)", which got a very funny reaction. :D
And when we were watching the news on TV, the Japanese people in the hostel asked if I could actually understand what was being said, and I told them I could read the Japanese subtitles and text on the screen but couldn't really keep up with their speech very well, repeating back what I was reading... Everyone thought that was pretty crazy. :P
It was nice being able to read much of what I saw when out and about, but then a lot of the signs and menus had English beside them anyway...
So, idk. Definitely learn to be able to read katakana, and hiragana. But you might want to try to find some method for having conversation practice in Japanese instead of spending too long on learning how to read and draw characters. On the other hand though, if you're going as an exchange student for a whole year, I guess you'll probably be getting lots of talking practice when you're there anyway... so reading might be more useful to have a headstart on. Idk. ^^;January 17, 2016 at 2:42am - Thanks for the replys guys Helped alot ! ^.^January 17, 2016 at 2:51am
