Alright so I'm about to study abroad in Japan i now hiragana, katakana, about 20 or so kanji Ii am aware that 20 kanji is not enough) and enough vocabulary to hold a basic conversation with my Japanese mother. I'll be entering third year junior high in Saitama. keeping in mind I've been to Japan and know the cultural do's and dont's can anyone give me some advice on being prepared

Get to know basic Japanese vocabularies and kanji by completing at least all chapter tests for level 1.

Learn some quick slang. Not necessarily dirty slang, but just things like filler words or common verb shortenings. For example, understanding "なんか" or "~てしまう=ちゃう" When I was in Japan, I have to say this probably confused me the most. I spoke to people expecting textbook japanese. After asking them to repeat themselves like thirty times they realized they couldn't use slang because I didn't understand it.
And I agree 100% with beeant: learn hella vocab. Even if you can't directly translate a sentence, guessing at the meaning is much easier if you understood the key words of a statement. So learn as much vocabulary and slang as you can in however much time you have.
