- Well, it depends on what your counting and the consonant that follows the counter. Generally the consonants k,s,t,h,f,p lead to a modification of the normal counting rule. Have a look on the board there if you want. I'm trying to find a better one meanwhile ^^ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_counter_wordMarch 21, 2016 at 5:34am
- Here's a good one if you are quite familiar with hiragana and katakana. Have a look to "Numbers past 99" and "Other counters" sections. I hope it will help you ;)March 21, 2016 at 6:13am

- Not really, I've read the article before and didn't really get it either, and if it should be depending on the consonant that follow shouldn't はっせん & さんぜん both be either せん / ぜんMarch 21, 2016 at 6:28am
- These are exceptions. And, as said in this article "numbers past 99" section, some words have been changed in order to make the pronunciation easier for them. However, it results that it makes it a little bit more difficult for us as it changes the normal pattern. These exceptions have to be learned by heart ;)March 21, 2016 at 6:58am

- wait they have kanji for numbers? I thought they used 1, 2, 3, ... like we do since that's what I've always seen on Japanese sites.March 21, 2016 at 8:26am
- Yep. They usually use numbers we all know, above all in big cities, but it's a good thing to know them (1 to 10) because in smaller towns or humble restaurants in big cities, they still use kanji instead of arabic numbers. Just to know how much you are paying for instance ^ ^ Otaku fact :P : If you have seen the anime "Bleach" you might have noticed the symbols on each captain's back. They are the kanji numbers of their respective unit. Try to have a look if you are interested ;)March 21, 2016 at 8:48am
- Ah ok, I've never seen BleachMarch 21, 2016 at 9:50am
- the usage of びゃく、っぴゃくis always at 3,6 & 8
other use hyaku ひゃく.
3 use byaku
6 & 8 use ppyaku
others use hyaku (ex: 1,2,4,5,7,9)
NOT just 300 / 600 / 800 but it continuation like 301 さんびゃくいち、302 さんびゃくに and so on.
nearly the same as that is せん/千 for thousand.
but this time only 3 & 8. 3000= さんぜん、8000=はっせん。March 23, 2016 at 5:04pm
