I noticed that some Kanji from lesson 41 are repetitions of older Kanji already covered in previous lessons. Is there a reason for this ?

    Well spotted! I'm always surprised no one ever mentions this. There are 83 repeated kanji in total, and every single one of them are within chapters 41 to 50 (which might answer another question—why there are suddenly twice as many kanji per lesson when you hit level 5 then back to normal in level 6 onwards). ^^;

I don't know what the reason for this is, but I'm fairly sure there is no intentional purpose for it. I happened to mention this to Beeant a couple of weeks ago while I was talking about something else, and it seems no one had reported it to him before. He's currently working on making a very nice app for this website right now though. ^^

Ok thank you, I'm relieved to see I'm not the only one surprised by it, indeed it seemed that everybody considered it normal ^^. Ah so in level 6 Kanji will be back to about 12 per lesson; haha when I arrived at level 5 and I saw 20 Kanji per lesson, for a moment I thought "OMG, does it mean there will be like 30 Kanji in level 6 ??" and I couldn't dare thinking of level 8... ^^. Do you know how many Kanji in total are covered in all the lessons ? When I go on most advanced people's profile, I can see that the total Kanji they have learnt is above 2000, but with an average of 10 Kanji per lesson and 80 lessons, that leads us to a mere 800 Kanji or so, so how come this discrepancy ?

The number on user profiles is simply the number of questions within the kanji lessons that the user has currently learned, not the number of individual kanji.

Now, for the number of kanji specifically "taught" by the kanji lessons:

    Lv1: 76 unique kanji (111 questions)
    Lv2: 96 unique kanji + 1 non-kanji "々" (185 questions)
    Lv3: 103 unique kanji (189 questions)
    Lv4: 118 unique kanji (328 questions)
    Lv5: 122 unique kanji + 83 duplicate kanji (254 questions)
    Lv6: 100 unique kanji (389 questions)
    Lv7: 100 unique kanji (295 questions)
    Lv8: 100 unique kanji (281 questions)

So there are 815 unique kanji in total + 83 duplicates in lv4 + 1 item which isn't really a kanji. 899 items in total, but only 815 unique kanji.

And the total number of questions within the kanji lessons is 2,032. This is why my profile says "2032/2032 kanji learned". ^^

These 815 kanji are all in the jōyō kanji list. Here is a breakdown by school grade:

    ・grade 1: 80 / 80
    ・grade 2: 160 / 160
    ・grade 3: 200 / 200
    ・grade 4: 200 / 200
    ・grade 5: 121 / 185
    ・grade 6: 29 / 189
    ・junior high school: 25 / 1130

Although we're only at 815/2136 jōyō kanji, the site covers the majority of the kyōiku kanji: 790/1006 (only 216 short). The trend with levels 7 and 8 focussed solely on adding the missing grade 2-4 kanji and starting on grade 5. So, if that trend continues, it's likely we will have all 1006 kyōiku kanji by the time just two more levels have been added to the site. ^^

The numbers are quite a bit nicer if we instead count how many unique kanji are "seen" when you answer all the questions within all the kanji lesson tests and all the vocabulary lesson tests (both put together, all 80 chapters from all 8 levels).

    ・grade 1: 80 / 80
    ・grade 2: 160 / 160
    ・grade 3: 200 / 200
    ・grade 4: 200 / 200
    ・grade 5: 170 / 185
    ・grade 6: 131 / 181
    (941/1006 kyōiku kanji)

    ・junior high school: 357 / 1130
    (1298/2136 jōyō kanji)

    ・jinmeiyō: 34 / 862
    (1332/2998 jōyō+jinmeiyō)

    ・hyōgai: 28 / ?

Total unique kanji = 1,360. Pretty nice chunk of 'em for the current levels we have so far. Good bit of exposure, even if only 815 of them are specifically taught in the kanji lessons so far. ^^

Thank you for the info ! Yes indeed ! Regarding the JLPT, I guess the eight levels should cover the Kanji required for N5 up to N3, right ? I'm asking this because I'm considering taking the N3 :).
  • mog86uk
Pretty much covers N5, N4, and most of N3. There are no official lists of JLPT kanji, so it's a bit harder to give any solid statistics for this. However, in all the unofficial lists I have, the 815 kanji specifically taught on this site cover every single kanji in N5 and N4.

For example, here is a breakdown by the JPLT kanji lists on the popular online dictionary Jisho.org (which gets it list from Tanos.co.uk), for just the 815 kanji specifically taught in the lessons:
    ・N5: 79 / 79
    ・N4: 166 / 166
    ・N3: 284 / 367
    ・N2: 182 / 367
    ・N1: 97 / 1232

Of course, you need to know the kanji from previous levels (like for N3 you need to know N5+N4+N3 kanji). So here are the compound totals.
    ・N5~N4: 245 / 245
    ・N5~N3: 529 / 612
    ・N5~N2: 711 / 979
    ・N5~N1: 808 / 2211

And if we go by the 1,360 kanji "seen" in all the lesson test questions, like I did before, the numbers for N3 are pretty decent (going by Tanos' list anyway):
    ・N3: 362 / 367
    ・N2: 295 / 367
    ・N1: 368 / 1232

    ・N5~N3: 607 / 612
    ・N5~N2: 902 / 979
    ・N5~N1: 1270 / 2211

But I wouldn't rely on any JLPT lists too heavily. There are different numbers of kanji in lists on different sites. Like Tanos.co.uk has different numbers comared to JLPTStudy.net or to Tagaini Jisho. Can see this post on here from a few of weeks ago for more about this problem:
