- I can't think of a better way than to take a university class.
This Youtube video leaves a few notable details out, but it covers the major events in a brief and colorful way:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Japan
If Wikipedia isn't enough, then you might like to check out the absolute treasure trove of freely available ebooks on this subject, available on Archive.org. You can find crazy detailed books on there, with books dedicated to specific wars and eras and such. For example, the following is a six volume work aiming to give a full view of the entire history of Japan, consisting of something like 4,000 pages:
https://archive.org/details/CambridgeHistoryOfJapanVol1
https://archive.org/details/CambridgeHistoryOfJapanVol2
https://archive.org/details/CambridgeHistoryOfJapanVol3
https://archive.org/details/CambridgeHistoryOfJapanVol4
https://archive.org/details/CambridgeHistoryOfJapanVol5
https://archive.org/details/CambridgeHistoryOfJapanVol6
Bit of light reading for ya. Would probably be quicker to take a university course, as jc89 suggested, than to read all six of those volumes, haha. But you can search for loads of other amazing old books specialising on specific areas and topics of Japanese history on there. ^^May 4, 2016 at 6:00am - Reading books, looking at web-pages, watching YouTube...
While it'll not be the most detailed and prone to errors; you'll be shocked how much you can learn in private study from spending a week on YouTube and Wikipedia. People turn their nose up at them but the internet is the best resource for learning we have, it's after all why we're all here using it to learn Japanese isn't it.May 6, 2016 at 1:05am - Best way ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh5LY4Mz15oMay 6, 2016 at 5:08am
