How come luffy in one piece would say "what is that" in Japanese but never uses the Japanese question mark particle?

Can you omit the question mark?
in casual speech you will often see that questions don't use a marker.- Could you say this then "Nan da ka"
- Or is that incorrect?
- It is not technically incorrect but it is not used. I hear 何だこれ "Nanda kore" almost everyday for what's this but as you can see there is no ka.
