- Mostly just through seeing the kanji used in new vocabulary words you learn.
Example: The kanji 犬. You will probably first learn that the way to say the word "dog" in Japanese is "inu" even before you ever see the kanji for it. Then you later learn that the kanji for dog is 犬 (maybe seeing the furigana "いぬ" written above the kanji if you are lucky, or look it up in a dictionary)...
Remembering just that the meaning of 犬 is "dog", and that the way to pronounce the word for dog in Japanese is "いぬ"... This way is effective enough for learning many readings automatically. You don't necessarily need to study and memorise each onyomi and kunyomi of every kanji before you even know any of the vocabulary they are used for. ^^May 22, 2016 at 8:17am - Does that work for kanji like 時間 time, hour じ and other neck cracker kanji?May 22, 2016 at 8:33am
