I took a practice test for the JLPT yesterday only to confirm my suspicions. I had my wife grade it with an answer key so that I would not have any of those "Wait I knew that I just circled the wrong answer" moments. I didn't miss a single question in vocabulary, reading and listening comprehension but I crashed and burned in the grammar section. While I try and study grammar using dictionaries, websites, textbooks and youtube the points are so rarely used in daily Japanese that I forget them. Anybody else having the same problem?

    You study grammar using dictionaries?

I think grammar would be my main failing too, but I'd likely also have problems with listening as well. However I'm currently working on both of those areas: grammar indirectly via reading books about classical Japanese grammar; listening while at work via audio-only files of anime episodes (just completed all 96 episodes of Maison Ikkoku).

Although I don't have any need or interest in taking JLPT anyway, so I guess I have nothing to worry about anyhow. :P

I was told to make flashcards for grammar and study those as much as I study for vocab and also to buy the grammar dictionaries. I haven't bought the dictionaries yet. This was advice from someone who passed N1.

Hey Shiro, I'm a little late to reply, but I figured this might be helpful.
I posted this on reddit a year ago. It includes a list of 1800 grammar questions of N1 and N2 level. 1700 of them include answers, so I quickly wrote a simple program to parse them.
    https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/37ooh4/%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC%E8%AA%9E%E8%83%BD%E5%8A%9B%E8%A9%A6%E9%A8%93%EF%BC%91%E7%B4%9A%E6%96%87%E6%B3%95%E3%81%AE%E7%A9%B4%E5%9F%8B%E3%82%81%E5%95%8F%E9%A1%8C%E9%9B%86/

I took the N1 this week, and I could very comfortably answer all of the grammar questions after practicing with this list.
The way I went about it is to solve the problems on the list, then used google when I couldn't accurately solve problems. Every time I came across grammar that I didn't know, I added it to a list with an explanation. After a while, I could solve almost all of of them very easily. In fact, on this week's N1 test, I probably spent only 10 seconds per grammar question, saving me tons of time to do all the reading excercises.

Thanks for the link. I always have trouble with grammar yet I can read full books with no problems or misinterpretations. It is only when I am tested do I freeze and forget little differences. Again thanks for the link.
