- And if it is, what is its spelling when it's written in hiragana... XDAugust 4, 2016 at 7:55am
- I think it's ねむい in hiragana and it means sleepy!
寝る is pronounced ねる and it means to sleep, so the pronunciation is easy to remember but the kanji are unfortunately not the same.August 4, 2016 at 10:38am - The kanji for「ねむい」is「眠い」, although. I guess you picked up the wrong kanji ?「眼」 doesn't look to form an adjective, neither another type of word. I looked up in few dictionaries and didn't found「眼い」. So i doubt it is a real word.August 4, 2016 at 11:35am
- @zscheftel The kanji for ねむい is 眠い. Its slightly different xD And I really wouldn't know mog. It's not recognized by any dictionaries x.xAugust 4, 2016 at 11:39am
- I'm well aware of 眠い(ねむい)...That one is extremely basic vocabulary and is even taught on here on JCJP (level 3 vocabulary, chapter 24). I've probably answered it nearly 100 times on here. So I'm definitely not asking about that one. ^^;
The reason I'm asking about 眼(まなこ)+ い is because it is one of the words in the "advanced typing test" on that 10FastFingers.com site I've posted about recently. It's supposedly one of the "Top 1000 Words" in Japanese. (Although it doesn't say in what way those words are "top", like as in most common, or most useful, or most interesting... but one would assume it means most common words...)
Anyway, in the end I actually found a word it *could* be!
眼居(まなこい)which I think means something like "the appearance of the eyes when something is seen", like the wide-eyed expression of the eyes when you find an item that had been lost. (=similar in meaning to 眼差し)

眼(まなこ)= eyeball
居(い)= be, exist (居る = the verb used for animate objects, いる)
Definitely not one of the top 1,000 most common words used in Japanese though... (I very much doubt it's even in the top 10,000 most common either!) :DAugust 5, 2016 at 2:45am
