- watch some videos about Japan, or look at pictures.
Looking at the beatufil places in Japan always motivates meOctober 4, 2016 at 2:56am - It's better to have so much things to learn.October 4, 2016 at 4:15am
- How long do you study Japanese?October 4, 2016 at 4:21am
- get hyped for a game that was never translated. do it yourself, no matter how long it will take you.October 4, 2016 at 6:01am
- games and thing about how learning a new language would be cool being dual language speakingOctober 4, 2016 at 7:08am
- i feel the same as well , i lost a little interest , but i really would like to learn it . its a bit hard =/October 4, 2016 at 2:49pm
- Don't overwhelm yourself. practice at least 30 mins a dayOctober 4, 2016 at 3:25pm
- @joker12332: (it's "let's ask some helpful questions" -time, welcome and sorry in advance because this might be long xD and slightly weird.. You've been warned)
- what kind of learner are you, have you found a study style that suits you? for some people reading and writing works best, some like speaking and listening better, for some fast gaming style learning is best. Depends on your personality which kind of style suits best.
- I'd suggest setting time limits for practising/studying (since there's life outside studying Japanese and you have to enjoy that too, right? ;)) set a small goal daily (f.ex. learn 5 new words/kanji) - study a bit regularly be it 15-30min or 1-2hours but not too much. Trying to learn too much (difficult stuff) too fast is a motivation killer, so I would avoid doing that.
- learning a language is a process, it takes time and patience. And repetition. It gets really boring at times with kanji, like who cares if I draw this kanji differently than the stroke order tells me to, the end result looks the same, who's gonna know? it's not like there's gonna be a kanji-ninja jumping out from my closet yelling "giyaaaa-nooooooo!!! do not do that, is wrong, wrong, wrong!!! you must follow the correct stroke order!!!" (why is my kanji-ninja speaking english, huh...and for some reasong I pictured this so that the kanji-ninja is Mario from Glove&Boots. That would be funny xD if you don't have any idea what I'm talking about check Glove&Boots from youtube, https://www.youtube.com/user/gloveandboots/playlists)
It is said that the best way to stay motivated is to make learning fun for yourself. Why are you learning, what's the goal? How could your study style be made more fun for you etc? (you don't have to answer these questions to me, I just hope the questions spark some thoughts in you and help you find the answers for yourself).
For example, I'm "studying" (hehehe) for the fun of it. I began with learning hiragana and katakana before anything else, by memorizing them and practising how to write them, and after learning those moving on to learning vocab and kanji. Those first moments of "hey I can read this word!!!" xD oh that feeling... I find it really rewarding when I notice that I understand more and more written and spoken Japanese, it's a small motivational boost for me to learn more. We all have problems with motivation sometimes, so I would also suggest this: when you reach your weekly/monthly goal, give yourself a small reward.
(applauds to anyone who made it to the end of this message, well done you!)October 4, 2016 at 10:06pm - You have to think about the end of of being functionally proficient in the language. What are you going to do with your language skills once they are at an appropriate level? Move to Japan and work here? Find a Japanese significant other? Enter university or a language institute in Japan? Work for a Japanese company in your home country? Or simply for leisure activities like finding a new favorite anime/manga/video game and being able to understand it without subtitles or translations?October 5, 2016 at 9:19am

October 6, 2016 at 8:04am - @katsuro90, you wrote some time ago that you're going start teaching japanese? how do you do that (online with email, Skype etc, or irl)? I'm posting this message in this thread because in another thread, @Sekkon was asking if someone knows anyone who could help them with speaking etc.October 7, 2016 at 1:27am
