When it comes down to it, people I attended high school in New York were made fun of for liking anime and being "weaboo's". However if you're passionate about the language and culture of Japan, taking college courses and continuing to self-study, most of the stigma melts away. As an adult I've come across so few people that thought anything about "liking the culture" besides being interested in hearing what Japanese culture was like, or wanting to learn a specific phrase or "how to say this in Japanese".
I'm from Mexico City. Over here, there are people who do make fun of others who show interest in Japan and its culture, especially. Say you are interested in France or Germany for example, no one would make fun of that. Talk about anime or your Japanese classes and you get called a "weeb", but mainly by easily swayed people so it's not that bad.
