You just have to try it out for yourself. There's no method that works for everyone. I personally learn vocabulary (not just the kanji by itself) with context from visual novels. My memory is really bad so context helps me a lot. But I can see why it's not for everyone.

Just try every method while sticking with it for a good enough period of time to understand if it's for you. Some methods take a while to start working properly because you need to adapt to them. Reading a visual novel right after finishing Tae Kim's Grammar Guide was really hard, but I suffered through it and it ended up working really well for me.

Yeah, different stuff works for different people. I tried learning vocab before kanji and found it exhausting to remember a different meaning and reading for each kanji in a word in addition to the word itself. But once I just focused on the meaning of each kanji I breezed right through them and now I spend so much less effort learning new vocab.

As for Fellivox's method of learning, that sounds like torture to me. ;p

So that's two nearly opposite methods of learning that we each use but it works for us. You can use our experiences to help find out which method works best for you.

    Commitment works the best.
