- This is interesting and kind of touches on differences https://www.japantoday.com/category/arts-culture/view/nippon-or-nihon-no-consensus-on-japanese-pronunciation-of-japanJanuary 26, 2017 at 8:43am
- One has the second mora of にち (日, "sun") contracted with the first mora of ほん (本, "origin") via gemination; the other pretends that the 音読み syllable of that first character has no coda by just throwing away that second mora in にち (日), allowing ほん to be plonked straight onto it nicely.January 26, 2017 at 8:58am
- They're both exactly the same but Nihon is more commonly used. You'll hear NI! PPON! NI! PPON! at like, international football matches and things like that because Nippon sounds more aggressive phonetically.January 26, 2017 at 2:11pm
- The article Shiro posted is pretty in-depth hahaJanuary 26, 2017 at 2:14pm
