Kanji are not pronounced like hiragana would lead you to believe?

I just want to clarify: is this true? As I'm starting out, the recorded sounds for the kanji don't seem to match the sounds that the hiragana written below them say they should... Is my hearing just really wonky, or is this true?

Thank you everyone!

It's just a glitch in the website that causes the Google Text-to-Speech voice to read verbs in polite form. You might see "来る - くる," and hear the TTS pronounce it as "きます", for example.
