Bah, not again! I didn't read past the second option in the answers, so I didn't notice there were two seemingly identical 'science' answers... Yet another word never to be 'excellent' again... >_<

  There needs to be different separate definitions for these words.
  
  学術 according to Jisho.org = 'science; learning; scholarship', which sounds like it means: discipline, area of study, branch of knowledge -- like a university course or scholorship?
  The kanji in 学術 = 学 learn/study + 術 skill/art/technique. A learned skill -- an art which you have been taught in?
  
  科学 according to Jisho.org = 'science'. This word seems to be used more for the systematic study of nature/phenomena through use of the scientific method.
  The kanji in 科学 = 科 department/section/course + 学 learn/study. A department of study -- putting taught scientific techniques to work in a certain course of scientific invetigative study.
  
  I don't know, I'm just making this up. I'm not sure I actually understand the difference between 学術 and 科学. :P

  Hi mog. I've referenced a few of my dictionaries, both Japanese and jp-en, as well as some on line ones.
  It seems both words mean science. While 科学 corresponds to "science" in the sense that it conveys the systematic pursuit of knowledge about phenomena, 学術 additionally conveys a broader connotation of things being scholarly, including scientific theories, scientists exploring existing knowledge about their field of study, application of technology etc.
  That is not to say that 科学 can't be used in similar contexts. They seem to largely overlap.

  Thanks, that helped me to understand 学術 a bit better. I noticed there seemed to be some overlap in usage too, which makes it a little awkward to give them completely specific definitions. Anyone got any ideas how they should be worded? ^^

  my problem is sometimes I click too fast and end up clicking the wrong word ( i.e I click right before I get to the right answer) or I move my finger and the mousepad goes to another word... things that could be avoided if I always answered slowly instead of clicking fast

  In a dictionary, 学術 means science. But we are familiar with 科学 better.
  So, both are correct.

  But both questions can't keep identical definitions though, as otherwise we will still have this problem I encountered.
  
  I guess it's not completely necessary that they be given different definitions to fix this problem. An alternative would be to prevent two identical definitions from being shown in the answer list, so that it won't allow another 'science' definition to be randomly chosen if 'science' is in the answer list already. However, this is likely to add extra processing steps, giving extra unnecessary work to the server and slowing down the loading speed of Practice questions?
