During the Kanji 18 test I came across this more than once. The choices 持って contain both もって & まって , essentially making it a guess as to which one the question is asking for.

The kanji aren't the same though, look at the first radical on the left.

待って(to wait) and 持って(to hold, own possess) are not the same.
  • TheDand963
the radicals are different on the kanji
  • TheDand963
    got fooled by that once
we really need to pay attention to kanji

Oh wow! ahahah I definitely need to pay closer attention...

Thank you for pointing that out by the way, I probably never would have noticed.

侍 "Samurai" is a nice one too. He doens´t "wait" 待 for the first slash (stroke).
  • FalconKrunch
Samurai and Wait aren't the same kanji either, so I don't know what you are going for there.

It's just a mnemonic to tell them apart

@nachsieben I haven't seen the kanji samurai yet but I really like that way to remember the difference.
  • nachsieben
@FalconKrunch Except, for that single stroke that make them different. ~"Who needs mnemonics, anyway?"~

@MintyHippo Another thing that was also usefull for me, was noticing that the diffent radical in 持 possess is related to 手 hand .

Yes, nachsieben san is correct. When you learn the word, 部首(a radical of a Chinese character) sometimes helps you remember some kanji.

If you're familiar with how Heisig names radicals, it's easy to remember, since you hold with your fingers (扌).
