How do the new features work exactly?

Sentences is pretty self explanatory you click the button and an example sentence(s) is shown. Is the example sentence searched from the "readings" section of the site, because I noticed a few words where it would return "no example found"?

But ah... I have no idea what the encountered button does >< I'm assuming it's a switch to limit the pool of questions to only previously encountered(or attempted?). In which case I can see that being super handy if you've leveled up but still want to work on the previous levels words.

Yes, the sentence button works exactly that way. The example sentences aren't literal examples. I talked about this with @mog86uk, he said he prefers literal examples as I do. The problem is that there isn't any open source database for literal Japanese sentence database. The current sentence examples are taken from http://tatoeba.org/eng/downloads As you can see the sentences are crowd-sourced, so the literacy level of the sentences vary.

As for the encountered button, is there any encountered button?
If you mean the encounter history, it is meant for you to check the vocabularies/kanji you just answered, so if you wanna know/learn more about what you just answered, the encounter history can come handy. As you may know that some of single Japanese words can have many broad meaning. So if you want to know more details to the meaning you can see it on the dictionary, and if you want see how it is used in a sentence, you can see it on the sentence examples.

When I was having a look through they vary a lot and sometimes they use other inflections of the word as well. Super handy to get an idea of how the word is used.

In the settings menu there is an "encountered" option under status that I don't remember... maybe it's just me being forgetful. ><

The encountered option is a flag to only show encountered vocabularies/kanji or include New stuffs in the practice questions. Maybe I should just change it to New instead of Encountered to make it less confusing?

No I think it makes sense I just didn't remember it being there for some reason 0_0

Yeah, the Encountered option is new as you thought in your first post.

I was a little concerned about how much potential this new feature has for being abused. I tested it out with a new account. However, it turns out that your level setting is ignored while you have the Encountered option enabled, so some of the things I feared could happen would not actually work too well.

There could still be problems depending on how the encounter algorithm is set though, and I haven't tested what it is like since this algorithm was changed yesterday.
