hi everyone, i am practicing kanji by writing it down with the meaning and the romanji next to it, then as it starts to stick in my head i remove the meaning and romanji untill i know it. is that an efficient way or is there a better way?

i'd recommend not using romanji, just kana. trying to remember kanji through romanji seems like it'd slow progress enormously. there's no advantage to writing 人as hito rather than ひと.

Personally I kind of memorize the readings and how the kanji looks and then I learn associated vocab with it to really make is sink in.
I agree with rinkuheroさん to get away from romanji and stick with kana.

just wanted to point out that its "romaji" and not "romanji".

both are acceptable -- "The romanization of Japanese is the application of the Latin script to write the Japanese language. This method of writing is sometimes referred to in English as rōmaji (ローマ字?, literally, "roman letters") (Japanese pronunciation: [ɽóːmadʑi] About this sound listen (help·info)), less strictly transcribed romaji, sometimes incorrectly transliterated as romanji or rōmanji." from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Japanese

hmm, actually i was too quick to read that, it just says that romanji is a frequent incorrect transliteration. nevermind then, i'll try to use romaji from now on, even though romanji would make more sense to me (because it's from roman letters).

Calling ローマ字 (rōmaji) "romanji" doesn't really make any more sense than calling 漢字 (kanji) "chineseji".

In Japanese language, "ローマ" (rōma) is the word for Rome, and 漢 (kan) is a word used to mean China. "Roman" and "Chinese" are English language words...
