"Third language" would probably something like 三つ目の言語 ?
Pretty sure 三ヶ国語 refers to Japanese + Chinese + Korean? I don't remember ever looking it up though, so this might also be a completely incorrect assumption. :P
It could mean what you say, Mog, but I haven't heard it referenced to that before. It does mean 3 languages. For example, ３ヶ国語が喋れます。Or in my case, I often say ４ヶ国語が喋れます。- Wow... (lost for words)... o_o
I mean I knew it meant 'three languages', but somehow on the very first time I encountered that question I instantly assumed it must refer to something specific... I have absolutely no idea why that happened but it got stuck in my head as its primary meaning after that. Weird, lol... ^^;
What are your four languages? I'd only list English and Japanese for myself. - @Koukyoshi
Just thought... The old JCJP layout had the example sentences for each question on the left side of the Practice page. I actually have a feeling I might have seen that "Japanese, Chinese and Korean" thing in one of those example sentences. The sentence was probably about a list of languages someone knew. Funny how that ended up taking over the word's actual meaning in my head. :D
(Or maybe my imagination really is that good that it came up with something that crazy spontaneously!)
Oh yeah and 'long time no see' btw. I meant to say that on the previous post. ^^ - That may very well be the case. I've just never heard it used like that. Then again, the Japanese people I've encountered don't need to say how many languages they can speak 'cause it's usually just Japanese.
I can speak English (of course), Japanese, French, and Creole; but the last two are getting harder to speak and write with each passing day. My listening and reading are fine, though. I just don't have enough opportunity to practice other than talking to my parents. It's usually just English and Japanese for me.
Ah, I see what you mean. You remembered the example sentence instead of the actual definition.
