Ayo not to double post, but I have one legitimate suggestion for this website.

- Implementing a "Type" option, where, instead of having multiple choice, you're made to type an the answer on your own. My reason being it is often I get a word I don't know, however, I DO know the other three (out of four) options available, therefore being able to select the correct answer.
However, if I were to use that method, and answer correctly, the JC.JP algorithm assumes that I am familiar with that word, and will quiz me on it less, lowering my chance to learn it via these means. Therefore, I answer it incorrectly on purpose, ruining my fake internet points.

I understand, multiple choice is more attractive, as it is easier. I will however argue it is less constructive. I feel that this should be an option, as those with weak kana abilities might struggle with typing as they begin, however, as they progress, this will be a highly beneficial resource to our learning community.

TLDR: AYO JC.JP STAFF GIMME AN OPTION TO TYPE ANSWERS WITHOUT CANDYASS MULTIPLE CHOICE BECAUSE WE GON' LEARN FASTER, YAHEAR? Make it an option, pretty please with sugar and mocchi on top.

Bonus: During "Practice" I would also like an "IDK" option, which makes JC.JP register that problem as 知らない(Idk my bff Jill), without marking you down for it.

Holler in the comments with your opinion.
Learning isn't easy, and we here to learn.

Funny thing, JCJP Practice used to have this feature on the previous version of the site (which was around 8 months ago). You're the first person I've noticed mention it, and seemingly nobody who was here before the version update has even noticed that it's gone. :P

I tried to use it a few times. I liked the idea of it, but because the answers are often pretty long it was tricky to type every single letter of it perfectly correct... And it didn't accept slight variant written forms of the answer even though they are also correct. I had other issues with it too, like when it kept on thinking I'd finished typing before I'd entered the whole answer and would say my half-finished answer was wrong. The design of the feature could have been improved though.

Actually, I guess it wasn't not quite the same as what you are asking for, as you could still see the 4 answer choices. The text box was simply below the answer choices, so you were simply typing out what you could already see, when it would be much easier to just click it... I tried covering up the answer choices though, which made it a bit more like what you are suggesting. :)

Apparently the text input feature was added to JCJP over 5 years ago:

Also, I get what you mean by "fake internet points" and I'm sure everyone knows earning points is not their main goal for using this site. However, the points system was implemented for a reason, giving the site a competetive feeling and making learning a bit more fun.

"because the answers are often pretty long"
    ^

That is the thing, IT IS a bitch, however, I feel there are many words here that jcjp thinks I know (by no fault of its own algorithm) which in reality, I do not know. Like the "Classroom" joke I made yesterday. I do not know that word. I answer it wrong on purpose. However, with 6 wrongs and 5 rights, it is only a blip on my radar, in favor of tango I care about. If I was forced to type it, I might be a bit better along.

Also, love you. In the gay way. 110% percent homo

PS: "People love fake internet points"."
    Shit, I love them too.
I get heated when I loose a combo like anyone else. I have a strong criticism in this area too, however, I don't wanna post a long, bitching, post daily. I like to spread my crap across the floor over a day or two.

This is a good idea. The tricky part is determining whether the written answer must be in English, Romaji, kana or kanji.

Washoku - I'd like a combination of kana and kanji. Romanji is for posers. And obv, English for the questions that are given in English. For my personal method of learning, I would prefer this.

The overwhelming majority of people use romaji keyboard input method to enter kana on their computers anyway. Often wonder if the people who hate romaji so much have actually noticed they are using it themselves... Just sayin'... :P

Would also be interesting how it would deal with multiple acceptable answers, such as the following situation:

換える / 代える / 替える / かえる / (kaeru), but probably should accept 変える (different meaning of "change") and definitely should not to accept 買える or 帰る (completely different meanings), even though all of these have the exact same reading of かえる... That's something I had issues with when we had this feature on the previous version of JCJP.

However, I definitely think your suggestion would be a useful feature for JCJP to have. For a start, typing the answer is how you answer on Slime Forest Adventure. And I think Renshuu.org also has the option of text input answering mode, although I haven't been on that pay-to-use site for a very long time...

@K I like @mog86uk's answer. Most of us use a Romaji keyboard. :)
  • mog86uk
I messed up some of what I said...

I meant to say: "but probably should not accept 変える" and "definitely should not accept 買える or 帰る". Hopefully people were able to guess this is what I meant already without me explaining though.

    (Wish we had the ability to edit posts. I make these kinds of mistakes way too often.) ;_;

I always use kana keyboard layout (on an English keyboard without any kana labelling on my keys). I can touch type both romaji layout and kana layout at roughly the same speed, but kana layout is what I personally prefer.

HOWEVER, I don't recommend anyone start learning kana layout! I'm not sure it really has any benefits. It is difficult to use without large hands (or a small keyboard...). Romaji layout needs only 19 different keys to be able to spell all the kana. Kana layout needs a ridiculous 47 different keys and even needs to use Shift with some of the keys to write things like を,っ,ゃ,ゅ,ょ...

Sometimes kana layout takes more key presses than romaji layout to type a kana. For example: じゃ
    ・romaji layout = three keys: "Z Y A"; if you have a 20th key "J" you can write it with two keys: "J A".
    ・kana layout = four keys : "D" (し), "[" (tenten ゛symbol), "Shift" + "7" (small ゃ).

That said... Whenever I think about the following thing, I definitely think about suggesting people learn it. Here's something I REALLY hate about romaji...

People continually typing こんいちわ is almost definitely thanks to the fact they are using romaji layout input!! People incorrectly typing "KONNICHIWA" when what they should have typed is "KONNNITIHA".

With kana layout, something this dumb would be a million times less likely to happen! You type just the 5 keys that represent those 5 kana:
    "B Y I A F" = こんにちは

LOL, long romaji hatred rant over. Hopefully nobody read that but it helped me get it off my chest! :D
