Bleh. Can't believe I made this silly mistake. I was clicking through the answers pretty quickly without paying enough attention, as I was trying to watch Japanese TV at the same time... Somehow my brain saw the 布 (ふ) "cloth" kanji and immediately I clicked it without thinking. How can that answer be さいふ if it starts with that kanji, stupid brain, work harder because I'm trying watch TV... ;_;

Also, this post might be more just an excuse to show off the Njij Show program! Niji show is awesome (although what was on at that time was pretty lame... think he's some guy from One Direction?). If you want to watch Japanese TV, check out Niji Show! Has 10 major Japanese TV channels working near perfectly:

    You convinced me! Although I live here, I don't have a TV. Haven't had one for 5 years, actually. Works like a charm. I'll be able to watch my favorite shows when they air. Thanks!

    Haha. I wasn't expecting the first person to show interest to be someone in Japan--someone who could just get a TV and watch it normally. Glad it helps you though. :D

    I think the streams are all always delayed roughly 5 minutes behind actual air time.

    I want to watch evening Japanese TV, but even though that's around 8am-1pm here in the UK I get to bed around 8am so I miss all of it! I always end up stuck with watching late night TV and daytime TV... ;_;

    Do you have to pay TV licence fee to have a TV in Japan? Here in the UK we have to pay this yearly tax because of stupid BBC...

    @mog86uk Yes, this is a major disadvantage of multi-tasking. ;)

    It's always funny when I tell my students or people I meet for the first time that I don't have a TV. They all look at me like O_o, lol. But seriously, it's not necessary. There isn't anything I can't watch from my laptop that's plugged into my 27" monitor.

    Why do you go to bed so late?!? Lol

    For anyone who has a TV, you're obligated to give your info to the NHK guy who comes around, so they can start the billing process. It's possibly that was the catalyst for me not buying a TV 'cause you have to pay whether you watch NHK or not. I don't know how much it costs 'cause I've never paid before.

    @Koukyoshi Sounds very similar to how it is here in the UK. I checked out the prices:

    Japan - NHK TV licence yearly fee = 13,600円
    Japan - NHK satellite TV licence yearly fee = 24,090円
    UK - BBC colour TV licence yearly fee = £145.50 (25,740円)

    Without paying for BBC licence fee, apparently it's even illegal to watch any online TV on a computer or phone, even if it's a foreign language station broadcast from outside the UK!!

    Stupid BBC, smh. The situation doesn't sound quite so bad in Japan. I wonder if the US has TV licence tax too? I kind of thought this was just something unique to the UK because of the BBC.

    In the US, anyone can own any amount of TVs and the government doesn't care. However, because we're so spread out, it's almost impossible to get an antenna signal anywhere unless you're in a major city, so we generally have to pay for cable or satellite service anyway. Ends up costing a lot less then those TV licenses though. I just started living alone, myself, so I don't pay for TV, seeing as there's so much available on the internet.
    Our equivalent to BBC is PBS, but they're a comparatively small operation and they are mostly supported by voluntary donations.
