I think this may be the only reason why I would learn japanese. To say something completely absurd in Japanese, then walk away with confusion on everyones faces.

The best part is being "in the know" about parts of Japanese culture no one expects of you. Having people sing part of an obscure enka song and then finishing the line really blows people away. :P
Gojira is way more popular in America. Most folk here don't really care about him.
Just noticed for the first time that the word ゴジラ is pretty close to ゴリラ!
Maybe I should have made this connection even without knowing the Japanese words--just from the English "Godzilla" & "gorilla"? But for some reason that didn't happen for me. :P- You do know its a mix between Gorilla and くじら dont you? Though he is nothing like a whale, nor a gorilla. I think the story goes it was the nick name of someone somewhere.
- Oh wow... くじら too... haha. I definitely wouldn't have spotted that one. But looking the name up on wiki really does say that. o.O
I was thinking after I started writing it that I don't remember Godzilla ever looking anything even vaguely like a gorilla. I thought the name must relate to his strength and actions, in a way of being similar to King Kong.
The only Godzilla film I've watched was one time when I was very young. I'm fairly sure it was even a black and white film, but then I did have my own dodgy black and white TV which was what I likely watched it on (so wouldn't have been in colour either way)... I don't remember it too well at all. Makes me feel much older than 29 talking about that. :D
