I think adding a "I don't know" (name could be better) button to the system would be a nice addition. I sometimes stumble upon a kanji, that is new or that I do not remember, but since I don't have a choice to pass it, I have to guess. There's a 75% chance of not getting it correct, when it should be that 100% chance that you won't get it correct (Using logical guessing is a different matter).

Having that button, it would allow the user to purposely get the answer incorrectly, so they don't have to be forced to guess it and have it correct, when they didn't know it. Thus, making it so the SRS is more accurate and efficient.

Although, the user could always go and find the kanji in the lesson sections, take the quiz and purposely get the wrong answer to it, but that will waste the user's time. Which the button could replace the time spent of several minutes, looking for the kanji and taking the quiz, with a few seconds of clicking the button.

    Here I agree.
    I used to look up the words I dont know in a dictionnary, try to remember it, and reload the practice page. Usually then a different question would appear, and if the word of earlier appeared again later, I would either input the answer if I remembered it, or look it up again.
    Now that even after reloading the question stays the same, I cant lazily skip questions anymore :*D... (here a real thanks by the way, that keeps me studying) but I cant use my serious learning method either.

    A "I dont know" button could be used to introduce or re-introduce a word. Without affecting the xp maybe, since the user knows that he doesnt know it.

    I think, it is a bit different, for the "I don't know" button it is only tell that you don't know that word but by current 4 choices system, it also tell that you don't know the rest of it if the answer is wrong

    its good to study the four options and see what you can make of the different kanji there that might indicate which of the answers contain relevant meanings to the english word. If you see the symbol for person or day or moon, or man or woman etc it helps glean meaning and perhaps develop a deeper understanding of how kanji are constructed. Probably a good language skill for anyone to work on

    Yes a "i don't now" or skip button wouldn't really help in terms of learning. being presented with four options you are forced to not only review the four other words/kanji, but also remember the meanings to them as well. If you don't know, then it forces you to guess the meaning from the Kanji used. This is EXACTLY how Japanese people figure out the meanings to words they don't know, I've seen it first hand.

    It think it doesn't really matter for SRS if you get it right by guess on the first try and get 1★, because on the next encounter you will likely get it wrong and be back on 0★. If you get it correct again, and keep getting it correct, then this should mean you've actually learnt it? ^^

    0★ is 1 day until oblivion.
    1★ is 2 days until oblivion.
    So it's not really a major big deal if you're 1★ on a word which you probably deserve to be 0★ on.

    Anki works more like this. Rather than selecting an answer, you select when you want to see the card again. You need to use more than one thing to really learn anyway so give it a shot: http://ankisrs.net

    Actually I forgot Kanjibox works even more like this. There is a question mark box you can answer with, but I never use it. Seems always better to guess to me: http://kanjibox.net/

    @Omo6iroi & Roguespierre
    I guess it's all about the person's preferred method of studying.
    I do check the characters to see if I can a logical guess out of it, but I rarely check what the wrong one said or meant. I tend to go by fast and don't notice things like that, so that's why I find the button to be useful, for me at least.

    However, the button could make it so all the words in the question get and incorrect also, since the person could not use process of elimination to get the correct one.

    @mog86uk
    Not major, but it's something.
    I don't know, it just for some reason bothers me that I got it correct, when I did random guessing and I was suppose to have it incorrect.

    I've never done a complete random guess on a question, so I might not be able to relate to exactly what you mean. Whenever I come across a new question, I narrow it down using logic and gut instinct as to which of the four answers looks most likely to be correct. I've never put my hand over my eyes while waving the mouse around to blindly click a random answer.

    But I didn't begin learning Japanese on this site. If I was an absolute beginner, and had never even watched subbed anime or listened to Japanese music (so therefore have nothing to base any logical decisions on), then I can see I would be forced to make some purely random guesses with the way Practice currently works. However, if I was in this situation, I would probably want to work my way through the lessons first and only set the Practice settings to levels I'd already fully completed when using Practice.

    I recommend never making purely random guesses. Instead, study each of the four answer choices slowly and carefully, then pick the best answer based on logic and gut feeling. ^^

    Hmm, I'm going to try restricting the practice levels to ones I'm more familiar with, in order to memorize them well.

    Thanks for the advice!
