"みじか" ? How have I only noticed this on the 53rd time answering it! o_O
Shows how much I have the Show Kana setting turned off. I only noticed because I was using my typing mod and it didn't accept the first answer I typed -- みぢか.

What's really weird is that it's even spelt "みじか" in the furigana on the "Sentences" feature for that word. On the other hand, the "Dictionary" feature has it spelt the correct way... I'm fairly certain みじか isn't a valid spelling, right?, but after seeing the sentences feature furigana spelt that way I'm not so sure... ^^;

  Oh-- I never even noticed the kana on that one. EDICT has まぢか, and it obviously makes more sense.

  Maybe じ is often used in place of ぢ? I just noticed that the kana for 鼻血が出る are given as はなじがでる instead of はなぢがでる

  Hmm-- 鼻血 by itself is spelled in the vocabulary as はなぢ.

  That is pretty strange.
  
  I knew about はなじがでる a long time ago. I thought it had been changed, but I just checked and it really is still じ.
  
  I know that one of the things in the post war Japanese spelling reforms was for changing spellings from ぢ to じ (and づ to ず, among others). But I'm fairly sure that only applied to words where the use of ぢ was completely meaningless.
  
  In the dictionary there's also this word, 身近い (みぢかい). It would be crazy if sequential voicing of 身 (み) + 近い (ちかい) = みじかい !

  Cool. Now I've just got to remember that it's fixed when I encounter it next time, instead of thinking I need to type the wrong spelling for it to work. :P
