    日本 = sun + origin = Japan (The sun rises in the east, and Japan is farther to the east than any nearby nations.)
    日本人 = nihonjin = Japanese person
    日 can mean both sun and day; 本 can mean both tree and root/origin.

    I like to think the kanji 本 simply means "origin/source", and all other meanings are based on this. So when it is used on its own to write the word for "book", in this case it is still meaning source as in 'source (of information)'. So I wouldn't even think of "book" as being a meaning of this kanji.

    Might not be correct at all for me to think like this though. ^^;

    I meant "book"; I wrote "tree" in a moment of absentmindedness,since the "root" meaning comes from it being a picture of a tree indicating the root with the horizontal line.
