Personally, since I have been watching anime for many years I learned many words and meanings through speech and image.

Anime can be good for some things, but I'd also recommend watching non-anime Japanese films, especially dramas, to get a feel for a more natural type of speaking and how the tone of conversation switches between polite and casual usage. Watching the Japanese broadcast of NHK news might help too (there are clips available on their website). And if you can, going to Japan for a month or two is actually the best way to practice listening. You'd be surprised how quickly you pick things up when it's at least 90-95% of what you're hearing on a daily basis.
