- I tried the Heisig's method when I started, doing one lesson a day, and dropped it at around the 1200th kanji. There is just no point in it for me since I don't need to learn how to write it by hand. It did help me recognise those kanji later on, but that only makes me "feel like I've seen it before".
What I did a while after that was I learnt all the grammar from Tae Kim's guide in a week and then went right on to reading visual novels. I was horribly slow at the start since I barely knew any vocabulary and I had to get used to interpreting sentences, but with time I was able to read without stumbling too much.
This method is more helpful in my case since I suck at memorisation. I learn much better when there is context. Some may say that you have example sentences when you go to the dictionary entries, but by context I mean the actual story of the game, which lets me categorise the vocabulary I'm learning depending on the themes the game covers.
As to how much vocabulary I learn with this method, it depends. There are visual novels with some really basic vocabulary that I can already read pretty freely, but there are others where I stumble a lot. The theme of the game also determines it's vocabulary. It also depends on how much the words are repeated over the course of the playthrough. It's easier to learn a word if it's mentioned more than once.
To put an example, Grisaia no Kajitsu's vocabulary jumps between intermediate and advanced levels, and I stumble upon new words almost every line (line being every time you click for new text). In an hour of reading I'd say that I encounter anywhere from 20 to 200 new words and many others that I have the feeling I know but forgot and still have to check.
The biggest drawback of this method is that the very start is comparable to learning how to play EVE Online (not really). But the best thing is that once you're past that, you can already start enjoying what you read, even if at a slower pace.
