- I'd say that someone being influenced by anime to learn Japanese is understandable but someone saying they've straight up learned most of what they know from anime is kinda...yeah. I don't get it either.October 25, 2016 at 6:26am
- When someone says they learnt Japanese from anime, they usually mean "konichiwa, im weebsama desu, i daisuki ramen itadakimasu and my imouto is watashi waifu".
So yeah, most people who say they learnt Japanese from anime mean that they have picked random words and associated them with the subtitles. They can't string coherent sentences. They are just delusional, exhilarated by the fact that they can understand anything at all.
Learning Japanese from anime alone is nigh on impossible. You have to use materials outside of anime to learn even the most basic stuff. Even if someone memorises every sentence of every anime they watch with every subtitled translation, they won't be able to understand anything outside of that, it's like preparing for a math test by memorising the entire textbook with the answers, only to receive a test with made up questions.October 25, 2016 at 7:19am - ^yea that guy is right. Once I got to what I would call an intermediate level of Japanese I started watching without subtitles and you have to pause the video every time you hear a word that you don't know/remember, look it up in a dictionary, write it down on a list, and review the list at the end of the anime watching session. But this was after two years of university level Japanese classes plus a couple studying on my own.
To say that you started from nothing and learned Japanese from anime is a joke.October 25, 2016 at 9:21am - When you have a conversation level then this is very helpful. Because you simply hear many different conversation and different words doing nothing. This is not only about collect and translate the every second word, this is the level when you even when don't know the words, still can guess what does it mean, without running and translating and learning. There are many different phrases that can be learn easily. Think about the kids. They can't write and can't read but they an speak already! The system is same, they hear many times from their parents, tv, other people word, sentences and can already say something. So here is same thing. This is very powerful and easy way (Plus it is easy to understand many different accents and voices than people that hear only official language or something special for studying or exams). And who said that Subtitles are bad? Subtitles are very helpful even for C1 level.October 28, 2016 at 11:09pm
- Man, why do people hate paragraphs so much? I think they are great. I tend to skip any paragraph longer than five lines since it makes my eyes bleed.October 28, 2016 at 11:20pm
- probably some words from anime. i doubt they became fluent in japanese by watching japanese alone.
i learned what demo, gomenasai, daijoubu and things like that from anime before i started trying to learn japanese.October 29, 2016 at 12:51pm - by watching anime alone*October 29, 2016 at 12:51pm
- Here, new style. Better?

Well, I don't discredit anime as a tool to help in the process of learning, I just stated that it's practically impossible to learn Japanese with just anime and nothing else.October 29, 2016 at 6:37pm
- Well, this is true. Here is also important the level. People should have conversation level then it will work, in other case translate the every second word will make it hell =DOctober 29, 2016 at 10:45pm
- You can learn some basic stuff off anime, but obviously you can't be fluent solely from it. I like to supplement studying with watching Japanese shows and being able to match the Japanese words to English subtitles, and mentally note grammar or sentence structure helps in reinforcing what you've learned.October 30, 2016 at 7:33am
