A question to those who know a lot of Japanese. How long did it take you to start thinking in Japanese? A time where you didn't have trouble forming your own sentences (beside basic ones with SOV). I'm quite having the trouble as I'm deprived of many significant things in the language; being with conjugations, words, and others. Also, what have you used rather than studying words to help you get there?

This is my story and in no way does it mean that you will have a similar experience. I studied Japanese intensely for about a year and then went to an exchange program in Osaka for 8 weeks. When we arrived they made us sign a contract that we would not speak our native tongue for the entirety of the eight weeks. Even though I studied for a year prior I could not form my own sentences and could only translate what was in front of me or what I had heard. Three weeks into the program I started to form my own sentences because I went to a party and wanted to talk to a cute girl. I think what I am trying to say is I needed a person that I could talk to that I wanted to talk to before my brain switched to speaking Japanese.
