What does it mean when a Kanji is put on the "Oblivion" list? I had a Kanji appear on it all of a sudden and was quite confused.

- I think they're words you haven't studied in a whileJanuary 26, 2017 at 3:35am
- This site uses a spaced repetition system. Every time you answer a question correctly the time it takes for it to pop up in the oblivion list again is prolonged (you can see this by hovering over the #★ under the question). The oblivion list is where the questions you answer in practice come from so you don't have to go to the oblivion page to answer them.January 26, 2017 at 4:30am
- When "Oblivion" list was originally implemented, it was where words go if you haven't answered them for 30+ days. The English word "oblivion" means the state of something being completely forgotten or lost forever, so it is a perfect name for it — words that haven't been answered recently enough and might now be on the brink of being completely forgotten.
However, a year ago, Practice was changed to start using a "spaced repetition system" memorisation system. Now "Oblivion" list is where words go that have reached their SRS review due date. If you answer these Oblivion items correctly, they go up to the next SRS ★ rank. It's more of a "Review" list now.January 26, 2017 at 4:35am - All right, I had a feeling it was something like that but it said the last encounter was "two hours ago" so it felt a bit too soon to me and caught me by surprise. Thank you.January 26, 2017 at 4:49am
- Ah, that is because, instead of Oblivion going by how long it has been since you last answered the item (the old system I mentioned), it now goes by how long it has been since the last time you reviewed it (or, for "New" items, from the first time you answered it).
If you answer the item again before the SRS review due date, then the "Last encountered" timer resets but the SRS review due date doesn't...January 26, 2017 at 5:01am
