The second season of "Showa genroku rakugo shinju" will be on air!

This month, anticipated 2nd season of popular rakugo anime is going to start.
The name is 「昭和元禄落語心中 -助六再び篇-」(Showa genroku shinju - Sukeroku returns).

The story of the first season is as follows.

A man is released from prison and becomes the apprentice of a famous rakugo performer. The story focuses on the backstories of the performers and their struggle to gain popularity. Whilst learning he befriends another performer who has a completely different style.

The PV for 2nd season of 「昭和元禄落語心中」

This PV's music is directed by famous singer Ringo Shiina and sang by Megumi Hayashibara, the famous voice actor.

There was an old rakugo performer called "Yurakutei Yakumo".
He was a lone wolf as a rakugo performer.
And one guy named Sukeroku who is fresh out of prison was so attracted to Yakumo and became his apprentice.
This story is about his growth and struggle.

And in the second season which starts this month, Sukeroku grew as one matured rakugo performer.
But still, Sukeroku is in the middle of struggle and pain.
Just like the 1st season, 2nd season also focus on the inner mind description of charaters.

What is Rakugo?

Rakugo (落語?, literally "fallen words") is a form of Japanese verbal entertainment. The lone storyteller (落語家 rakugoka?) sits on stage, called Kōza (高座?). Using only a paper fan (扇子 sensu?) and a small cloth (手拭 tenugui?) as props, and without standing up from the seiza sitting position, the rakugo artist depicts a long and complicated comical story. The story always involves the dialogue of two or more characters, the difference between the characters depicted only through change in pitch, tone, and a slight turn of the head.

Rakugo is one of the Japanese tradition performance.
Unlike Kabuki or Nou, rakugo is more casual entertaiment for ordinary people back from edo era.
