If a national holiday overlaps on Sat or Sun, is there a compensatory day off in Japan?
Japanene law prescribes 15 national holidays in a year.
In many cases, national holidays fall on weekdays. But what if they fall on Saturday or Sunday.
Normally, we think it is natural that if holiday overlaps Saturday or Sunday then we would get a compensatory day off on next Monday.
Bun in Japan, unfortunately it is applied only when national holiday overlaps on Sunday.
When it overlaps on Saturday, we just have to work normally from next Monday.

How come this tragedy happens
Here is a trick.
Japanese law indicates “Workers have right to get a day off at least once in a week”.
But this law does not mention “a day off” should be Saturday or Sunday.
Thus, theoretically, Saturday and Sunday are not official holidays.
But many companies indicates that they deem Saturday and Sunday are days off in their working rules. Therefore we consider Saturday and Sunday are holidays.
In the past, there was not a compensatory day off even if national holiday overlaps on Sunday. Oh my god…
But in 1973, Japan law was modified into “Sunday must be considered to be a holiday based on business practice”.
Afterward, if national holiday overlaps on Sunday, next Monday would be a compensatory day off.
But recently everybody considers Saturday as holiday. So maybe in the future there would be another modification of law and give us a compensatory day off when national holiday falls on Saturday.

Matome
National holidays are so precious for both students and workers.
I hope we all can get as many national holidays as possible every year.
Oh 2017?
Sad news 4 out of 15 national holidays overlap on Sat.
We miss 4 days....
Oh my god….><
