What does 家 mean?

Vocabulary Lesson 1- Chapter Eight.

It has the kana "いえ", but when I click to listen, the voice says "うち"

Usually the reading "ie" means "house", the building (but not always!).

The reading "uchi" instead means "family", in a very broad sense. It can also mean "our side", or "our shop", "our team" and it can also mean "our yakuza family".

It is certainly a kanji with many readings.

Hi Kenji, if you don't have Rikaichan/Rikankun (depends on your browser) I cannot recommend it enough. However, if you have a Mac, I hear there is a similar program built in. Takes two seconds to DL, and will make your Japanese efforts golden.

家 means house and is used in the compound for 家族 (Kazoku) family. Hope that helps kenji san.
