Good luck to all of those taking the JLPT on Sunday (today for me)!
In about an hour or so, I'm going to the capital of my prefecture to take N1. From the practice tests I've done so far, it'll be close. I'm not too worried about listening, but the reading comprehension and the language knowledge sections are not going to be fun. I hope not to fail, but if I do, I'll just take it again in December.

- Thanks mog and devacto!
So here's a short summary how the test went.
Language Knowledge
This section is made up of vocab, kanji, and grammar. Going into the test, this was, in my opinion, my weakest section. To my surprise, I did much, much better than I thought I would. I didn't expect to get everything right, of course, but I feel I got enough right.
Reading Comprehension
Language knowledge and reading comp have to be completed in 110 minutes. I feel I went through language knowledge section fast enough to give myself a chance to finish the reading comprehension section. In the reading section, there are 3 short essays (approx 300 kanji), 3 medium essays (approx 500 kanji), 2 long essays (approx 1000 kanji), a comparative essay question, and a sort of search and find question. I had 5 minutes or so to skim one of the longer essays. I definitely need to work on my reading speed, and I'm not confident I did well on this section at all.
Listening Comprehension
To be honest, this was the section I was least afraid of. When I took N2 two years ago, I couldn't help but laugh at the questions. I found them incredibly easy compared to the rest of the test, and it showed. I got a 60/60 on the listening section. N1 is a different animal altogether. I'm not sure I did very well on this section. I did much better on the practice tests than on the actual test. Too much 敬語 I don't hear in everyday conversation. Maybe my ears were playing tricks on me, but I felt they spoke a little too fast.
All in all, I don't think I passed. The only thing I have going for me is unlike its predecessor, this new format is not how many questions one got right divided by the number of questions on the test. The test is graded on a scale, so I suspect even getting a question wrong could yield a point or two.July 6, 2015 at 12:13am - To further explain what I wrote last, let's say a question is worth 2 points. In a multiple choice style test there are always 2 questions that are completely wrong, a sort of right answer, and the right answer. If one chooses the sort of right answer, I believe this to be 1 point.July 6, 2015 at 12:25am
- Sounds like there is still a reasonable chance that actually have passed though. Interesting to read such a detailed analysis of what it was like.
When do you find out the results?July 6, 2015 at 12:57am - That's odd. I didn't know that, must be new. Gotta stop forgetting and put in the form to take the... who knows - N3, N2 - in September. Having a child and being generally busy means that a month has gone by and damnthatwasApril bah.July 6, 2015 at 8:33am
- @Mog: Given that I only need 100/180 to pass, there's definitely a chance. Since I did my registration online, I'll find out at the end of August.
@Arachkid: Yeah, if you try to find how the test is graded now, it's quite vague. I remembered this year because I don't want to teach English any more and having N1 will go a long way in terms of beating out someone for an interview who doesn't have it.July 6, 2015 at 8:44am - Almost sounds easy to pass when you say it like that, but I know it obviously isn't easy. Hmm, that's quite a long time to wait for the results still.
I was just having a look at the Kanken example papers on the official website:
http://www.kanken.or.jp/kanken/outline/degree/example.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanji_kentei
Those papers look fun! Was just thinking when you pass N1 you may be in need of a new goal to aim for? :DJuly 9, 2015 at 7:34am
