  Well first of all, you don't have to say 家 when you say return home. 帰る automatically implies that you are going to go back home.
  
  But anyway, this is did not return home in polite form:
  武さんは今日帰りませんでした。
  
  Short form:
  武さんは今日帰りなかった。
