is learning the english meaning or word for a kanji just a waste of time? you aren't learning the kunyomi and onyomi readings.

I don't think so. That's actually part of the method used in a book called Remembering The Kanji. You learn the English meaning and how to properly write over 2000 characters in the first volume of the series. Then in the second volume you focus on learning the readings. It's a long process, but it's methodical and very systematic so it's worth the effort in the end. But I'd say beginners should learn the practical use of the 100-200 most commonly characters before setting off on a huge task like mastering the 2200+ standard use kanji (常用漢字 Jouyou kanji).
