how did i confuse oblivion with oblivious?
  • MarkedCastle
I am also confused about the categories and how it judges the what words you need to practice.

    It can be harsh
You just gotta plug away at them. Visit the site more often . Hope that helps.

For a long time I've been wondering if maybe not enough people know the English word "oblivion"? I had never thought it was a rare word at all, but maybe some people had never seen this word before using this website? Non-native speakers of English would probably just look the word up in a dictionary themselves, but i guess English native speakers might be unlikely to think to do this.

    "Oblivion"
    — 1. "The state of forgetting completely, of being oblivious, unconscious, unaware, as when sleeping, drunk, or dead."
    — 2. "The state of being completely forgotten, of being reduced to a state of non-existence, extinction, or nothingness, incl. through war and destruction. (Figuratively) for an area like hell, a wasteland."

You know, like being "eternally forgotten", "falling into the abyss (oblivion)". With related words like the adjective "oblvious" and the verb "obliterate". There's a roller coaster here in England called "Oblivion", which is a vertical plunge into a pitch black hole. Just from the name "oblivion" should make this feature reasonably self-explanatory. ^^

I don't understand. There is no black hole on this site.
  • mog86uk
    @Aenan, In case you hadn't noticed, there's also no roller coaster on here either... I'm not sure what point you are trying to make... (?_?);

But this gives me a chance to add the link to the page I quoted those definitions from, which I forgot to add:
    https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/oblivion#English
  • Aenan
What is the link between the definition and the site?
  • mog86uk
Do you mean: what is the link between the definition of the English word "oblivion" and the function of the "oblivion" feature of JapaneseClass.jp?

Well, applying both those quoted definitions of "oblivion":
・"the state of forgetting [a vocabulary/kanji item] completely"
・"the state of [a vocabulary/kanji item] being completely forgotten"

I would hope there's no need to explain further what the link is. ^^

Items that end up in Oblivion are items that the site worries you may be on the verge of forgetting completely (items that look likely to fall out of your memory and into oblivion if you don't answer them again soon).

When you prove you can actually remember the oblivion item by answering it correctly, the site increases the spaced repetition ★ stat to the next level. Each ★ stat increase doubles how long it will be before the next time the site starts worrying about the possibility of you forgetting that item.

But whenever you answer a question wrong, even when the item is not in your Oblivion list yet, then the ★ stat level decreases by one, as the site feels like maybe it was too lenient and should have been worrying more about you forgetting that item.

0★ = 1 day before it returns to the Oblivion list
    1★ = 2 days
    2★ = 4 days
    3★ = 8 days
    4★ = 16 days
    5★ = 32 days
    6★ = 64 days
    7★ = 128 days

Official email explaining about the site's spaced repetition system, which includes about the Oblivion feature too. I uploaded this as I think many people either joined after that email was originally sent out, or just never got the email:

It's not how spaced repetition works. Because of the oblivion system, weak words are not practiced often enough and the majority of time is spent on easy and already known oblivion words.
  • mog86uk
@Aenan, By "weak words", do you specifically mean only the words that are marked "weak" and are in your "Weak" list? (Items which have been answered correctly less than 60% of the time — which have a correct:wrong ratio of less than 3:2.)

If this is what you meant, I think there's a problem with it too.

Ideally, I think Weak list words should appear much more frequently. They shouldn't have to wait for their spaced repetition timer to return it to Oblivion first; because if it's marked "weak", then surely the word hasn't even been learnt properly in the first place. I think the spaced repetition process should only apply to words marked "good" or "excellent".

For some reason "Weak" words now seem to be at the very back of the Practice encounter queue, having to wait for "Oblvion" to be completely cleared, then next having to wait for "New" to be completely cleared, then finally it allows the "Weak" words to appear.

Or were you talking about something different to this?
