In vocabulary level 1 chapter 9, the first word is ごはん but the audio I am hearing seems to sound like gomishi, which isn't a word according to Google translate. if I follow the ling to the dictionary, the first meaning, おまんま, has the right pronunciation, gohan, but the kana don't seem to match the pronunciation. The second meaning, ごはん , has the right kana but not the right pronunciation. Is this a bug or am I just looking at this wrong?

it's just because the audio is wrong. they're saying "go" "meshi". There are two pronunciations for each kanji, and the kanji that is pronounced "han" is also pronounced "meshi". It's a bug on Google's side; not japaneseclass'.

Yep, kanji usually have two types of readings: onyomi (readings originating from China) and kunyomi (readings originating in Japan). Not all kanjis have both types, and often there is more than one single onyomi and kunyomi per kanji.

The main readings for the kanji in ごはん (御飯): 御 -- kunyomi = お 飯 -- kunyomi = めし

The first kanji 御 is read as ご (onyomi) if the kanji after it are onyomi too, or read as お (kunyomi) if the kanji after it are kunyomi... So this is strange, because めし is kunyomi but still it has decided to try to use ご (onyomi) before it... It's not like it thinks they're two different words either, because 御 is never used as a word on it's own read as ご... ?

Hmm, something went wrong with my post again. It deleted part of the middle section upon submitting it... (There's definitely some kind of bug with comments)

I agree with the above explanations, but what I think wahaj is stating, is that the 2nd meaning at http://japaneseclass.jp/dictionary/御飯 has an audio file sounding like ごめし, but followed by the kana ごはん.

Its almost as confusing as listening to the audio file for "this" in Vocabulary Level 1 Chapter 2 where it pronounces the slash (これスラッシュこの audio for これ/この kana).

ok so for 御飯, which pronunciation do I use, go meshi or gohan? Also while we are on the topic, I am going to finish up level one vocabulary and then start on level 1 kanji. The kanji lessons don't have any audio. There is also nothing on the different readings that mog86uk mentioned. It seems I will need additional material to start my study. Do you guys know any good material or will I have to rely on Google? I would prefer the material to be available online.

It's ご飯 (gohan). Rarely, if ever, is it written as 御飯.

@wahaj The kanji lessons do list the onyomi and kunyomi readings for each kanji. However, there is no explanation given as to how the different readings work, but it does give examples of the kanji being used within words. It would be best to read up a little about why there are different kanji readings and how they are used.

I highly recommend reading the following page if you are interested to know when to use which reading:

I just noticed that in the JCJP dictionary page for 御飯, the other audio file (for the first meaning, おまんま) sounds exactly like 'ごはん' ?! But both meanings have exactly the same kanji... So how can that be a bug on Google's side?

Thanks. The kana and audio don't match in the lesson so that's why I just was clearing the pronunciation up. Also thanks the link. I think I'll be able to get started on the kanji tonight.
