- Pretty confusing, reading the last two sentences of your profile 'about me' section and then reading that post... Walking out of a library with 15 manga, the librarian must definitely have thought you were an otaku. :DJanuary 7, 2015 at 7:56am
- LOL. I'm not an otaku, but I just love to read!! I heard they were good so I grabbed them. Most of the books were Death Note (all 12), I wanted to read that for a long time after watching the anime..........but no, I'm no otaku, O.o. Trust me, I live around them, not a pretty site to see....ewwwww. I was just naming some of the manga they had on there.
The books I grabbed were Death Note (all 12), Cirque Du Freak (remember reading it when I was younger), Black Butler (heard about it, just wanted to check it out.), and Deadman Wonderland (it's not mainstream, and I didn't get to finish the series due to no second season).
But yeah, I do dislike (changed from hate) most (I changed it from all) mainstream anime and manga. They're not good in my opinion. NOTHING TAKES MAH DEATH NOTE THOUGH!!!!
(Just in case you want to take my Death Note, can I have you write your first and last name in it? I want your autograph. >:D)January 7, 2015 at 8:10am - hey deadman wonderland played on normal US television i consider that mainstream :PJanuary 7, 2015 at 5:33pm
- Is there something like a "mainstream" anime or manga?January 7, 2015 at 5:36pm
- Deadman wonderland sold only 1000 copies of the book last year! And barely anyone knows what it is......January 8, 2015 at 12:47pm
- When different people have suggested an anime to me recently, Deadman Wonderland has actually been one of the most common suggestions. Just within the last week someone has suggested it again to me.
Calling any anime mainstream though sounds funny still.
Back when I was at school here in the UK, when I began watching anime around 16+ years ago I barely knew of anyone who even knew what anime was. Anime was extremely rare to see on TV, even on satelite/cable. It was ridiculously hard to find anime in any shops; when you did find some on a shelf it was virtually always weird hentai stuff like Urotsukidoji; and box sets were something which didn't even exist, having to pay ludicrous prices for volumes with only 4 episodes on.
The situation is a LOT better now, although we're still lagging behind the US pretty bad. Can find anime in shops easy and cheap enough now, but I don't think we even have a single anime TV channel at the moment (a thing which pops up once every now and again, but usually disappears after only a few months). A lot more people watch and talk about anime these days though.
If someone asked me which anime are "mainstream", the first thing I'd probably mentiion would be the Studio Ghibli films, as they're the only anime I've actually noticed appearing on TV recently. I guess there's Pokemon and similar stuff on the kids channels. Whether something gets labelled as "mainstream" or not makes no difference at all to how likely I'll want to watch it.
Also, I'm not completely sure, but I reckon I'd probably get classified as an otaku. Sorry to say that. :DJanuary 8, 2015 at 2:41pm - Being... 29 (yeah, i'm probably one of the oldest here, and i'm probably not 29 :D) i remember when i bought my copy of Sailor Moon from the local comic shop and people started looking at me weirdly. Fortunately i wasn't the only fujoshi in the school.
Now, at least here in Italy, it's quite common to read manga and watch anime, even if it's not as common an 10 years ago. In my classes i'd say that a good 30% of the teens know at least some manga/anime title.
Anyway, when i think about "mainstream" animanga i think about Naruto, One Piece, Bleach... the "big" shounen ones.January 8, 2015 at 5:49pm - In the end does it really matter what's mainstream or not? Just watch/read what you enjoy despite how popular/obscure it is :)January 9, 2015 at 12:04am

U m0t m8? (冗談,冗談)January 9, 2015 at 1:00am - @DS25 fujoshi is not the equivalent of otaku for females....fujoshi are female fans who like man to man action in their manga....shounen-ai or yaoiJanuary 10, 2015 at 11:24am
- @takitogr: i've read it multiple times for "general female otaku". But probably i should have specificed better :DJanuary 10, 2015 at 5:45pm
- It doesn't really matter to be honest. But yeah fujoshi like boy love manga or animeJanuary 11, 2015 at 3:39am
