Tip for learning Japanese:

Look around your house! Get a dictionary of any sort, and look up the word for household items like toilet or toothbrush.

Expand your knowledge. You go to school? Write down a list of things you use in school. Protractor, pencil, ruler, etc., and then look it up when you get home.

I've also, to the annoyance of my ma, put labels with the Japanese name on some stuff I can't remember...

My English sucks so...just to elaborate, writing ラジオ on a Label and putting it on a radio......believe it or not, I keep forgetting that word O.p...

    Radio = 受信機 (じゅしんき)
    TV = 受像機 (じゅぞうき)

    Easy... :P

    Think he might want to focus on terms he'll actually hear/use. :P

    Just wanted to scare him a little. ;D

    (On a side note: Duolingo didn't accept 受像機 when I tried it...)

    Well, it does mean technically a radio receiver, which is not necessarily the same thing. If you want to scare him, tell him he needs to learn the kanji for every word, even ones usually put in hiragana. No one knows 林檎, like at all. But hey, learn it!

    I think 林檎 was written in kanji back when I played Crisis Core. I've known that one for a long time from somewhere.

    On Duolingo I always avoid writing any words in katakana. It is fun to test whether it accepts uncommon forms of words. It slows my progress but I don't feel like I learning enough by using the suggested common katakana words.

    Like instead of スーツケース I always write 旅行鞄. Things like that.

    Cool idea! I'll use it. :3

    I'll avoid stretching to use katakana on Duolingo (using a katakana version of a word to see if it exists), but won't shy away from using a katakana word if I know it's the most commonly used form.
