Darn I don't even know how to speak Japanese perfectly yet.... you're talking about dialects? :"D :P
I'd think it would be better to just pick up dialects once you get there. Just seems like something that would be better picked up naturally from spending time with the locals.
Adapting to a few regional changes should hardly take any effort at all, compared with the vastly more difficult crucial task of getting fluent in speaking Japanese in the first place.
Agree with mog. If you try to learn dialects now, you'll only end up confusing yourself.
Speaking a dialect, depends on where you live. I can speak Tochigi's dialect if I choose to. Unfortunately, in my experience, people (especially those in Tokyo) tend to look down on people who don't speak 標準語, making fun of their accents and such.
i love gotou island (nagasaki?) dialect as in Barakamon anime. =)- I didn't know Obama had his own anime series! o.O
