I'm in a Shotokan self-defense class. It's pretty cool. I've been doing it for 8 years now? I think that's about right. The Shotokan style is more about making your opponent not want to fight or unable to fight so you can get away. I like it. Some of the things can be quite violent, such as the McCarthy drill and the Nahanchi(?) drill (Dunno if that's the right way to write the Romaji for it, I don't see it too much. It could be Nahunchi.). Those both have elbows to the face.
It's fun.
